Gas m³ to kWh converter

Your meter shows cubic metres, your bill talks in kilowatt-hours. Count on roughly 11.6 kWh per m³ of high-calorific gas in Belgium. The tool works in both directions and estimates the cost.

Formula: m³ × conversion coefficient = kWh

Assumptions: coefficients of 11.6 kWh/m³ (high-calorific H gas) and 10.3 kWh/m³ (low-calorific L gas), CREG reference values retrieved on 18 August 2026. Default prices of €0.11/kWh all-in incl. VAT and €0.06/kWh for the energy component alone, orders of magnitude on the Belgian market in August 2026.

The formula, and where the coefficient comes from

m³ × conversion coefficient = kWh, and the reverse by division. The coefficient reflects the gross calorific value of the gas actually delivered. The CREG publishes two reference values: 11.6 kWh/m³ for high-calorific (H) gas and 10.3 kWh/m³ for low-calorific (L) gas. ORES reports a GCV of between 10.81 and 12.79 kWh/m³(n) on its network, and the CWaPE gives a range of 10 to 12 kWh per m³.

The coefficient printed on your annual bill is an average of the twelve monthly coefficients applied: that one, and only that one, counts. Sources accessed on 18 August 2026; prices per kWh recorded on the Belgian market in August 2026, to be re-checked before any decision.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert gas m³ into kWh?

Multiply your volume in m³ by the conversion coefficient on your bill: around 11.6 kWh/m³ for high-calorific (H) gas and 10.3 kWh/m³ for low-calorific (L) gas, per the CREG reference values. The regulator’s own example: 1,500 m³ × 11.6 = 17,400 kWh.

How do you convert gas kWh back into m³?

Divide your kWh by the conversion coefficient. For high-calorific gas at 11.6 kWh/m³, 17,000 kWh corresponds to 17,000 ÷ 11.6 = 1,465.5 m³.

Which coefficient applies in Belgium today?

The high-calorific (H) one. ORES now distributes high-calorific gas only, low-calorific gas having still circulated in some areas until 1 September 2024. The low-calorific coefficient is only useful for reading older bills.

Can this result be used to dispute a bill?

No. It is an estimate. The exact coefficient changes every month and depends on the aggregated receiving station: only the one printed on your annual bill counts, and it factors in volume allocation across the year.

What next?

Once you have your kWh, the real lever is no longer the calculation but the contract. Enter your annual consumption into our offer comparison tool, set it against the ranking of energy suppliers, and place it relative to average gas consumption in Belgium.
