A conventional electric water heater uses between 1,000 and 4,000 kWh a year depending on household size, which means 322 to 1,513 euros landing on your annual reconciliation bill. The range is wide because three things drive it: the volume of hot water actually drawn, the losses of the tank, and the region you live in. That last point surprises most people. Here is the full calculation, with Belgian 2026 figures and the charges that generic content leaves out every time.
How much does an electric water heater consume per year in Belgium?
From 1,000 kWh for a single person to 4,000 kWh for a large family.
The table below crosses tank volume, household size and the all-inclusive price per kWh in each region. Prices come from the CREG tariff for the third quarter of 2026: 32.22 cents in Flanders, 37.19 cents in Brussels, 37.83 cents in Wallonia. The CREG is the federal energy regulator, and its commercial average is the closest public proxy to what Belgian households actually pay. Consumption figures include standby losses, detailed further down.

Look at the bottom row. Same tank, same family, same showers: 224 euros a year apart between Flanders and Wallonia, purely because distribution costs and levies differ on either side of the language border. No supplier can fix that, which is one more reason to take care of the only negotiable part of the bill, the energy component, explained in our article on the price per kWh of electricity in Belgium.
The calculation, litre by litre
Heating one litre of water by one degree consumes exactly 1.163 Wh.
That single constant rebuilds everything. Take the volume of hot water you draw in a day, multiply it by the gap between mains water temperature and your tank temperature, multiply by 1.163, divide by 1,000. You get kilowatt-hours. In Belgium, mains water arrives at around 10 degrees and storage happens at 60 degrees, a 50 degree gap, which gives 0.0582 kWh per litre stored at temperature.
A ten-minute shower uses around 80 litres of water mixed to 40 degrees. The calculation gives 80 × 30 × 1.163 / 1,000, that is 2.79 kWh, or 1.06 euros in Wallonia and 0.90 euros in Flanders. Over a year, for one adult showering daily, that lands around 850 kWh of useful energy, before counting what the tank loses while it sleeps.
A family of four pays roughly a thousand euros a year for hot water. It is the second energy item in the home, right behind heating.
Why does the meter turn when nobody is showering?
Because a tank held at 60 degrees loses heat continuously, day and night, even with no use at all.
On a 200 litre water heater, these standby losses amount to 1.5 to 2 kWh a day, or 550 to 730 kWh a year. Translated into Walloon euros, that is 208 to 276 euros annually spent without a single tap opening, and 177 to 235 euros in Flanders. A fifth to a quarter of the hot water bill disappears in the utility room.
Five factors drive this item:
- tank volume, the first of them all: an oversized appliance pays losses on water nobody will ever draw. The Belgian association écoconso uses 50 litres per adult as a rule of thumb;
- insulation quality, readable on the European energy label;
- the temperature of the room where it sits: an unheated garage costs more than a tempered pantry;
- insulation of the first metres of pipework, almost always forgotten;
- scaling of the heating element, which degrades heat transfer year after year.

In Flanders, the capacity tariff adds an invisible bill
The price per kWh does not tell the whole story of what a Flemish water heater costs.
Since the rollout of the capacity tariff, the distribution share of a Flemish bill no longer depends on kilowatt-hours alone but on the power peak measured over a quarter of an hour, averaged over the last twelve months, with a flat floor of 2.5 kW. The average tariff applied by Flemish grid operators sits around 56 euros per kW per year in 2026, within a 52 to 60 euro range depending on the municipality, and Fluvius, the Flemish distribution system operator, puts the average monthly household peak at 4.24 kW.
A water heater element draws 1.2 kW on a 50 litre tank and up to 2.4 kW on a 200 litre one. If it kicks in while the oven, the dishwasher and the car charger are already running, it adds in full to the month's peak.

The calculation rests on the 56 euro per kW per year average and on the unfavourable assumption of a systematic overlap with the home's peak. The right-hand column is the good news: timing the heating cycle away from busy moments cancels the surcharge, with nothing to buy. Neither Wallonia nor Brussels applies this mechanism to households in 2026, and the reasoning there stays the classic off-peak one, covered in our comparison of dual-hourly and single-hourly meters.
Should you keep your water heater on a night-only meter?
The answer changed in 2026, and it now leans towards no.
A night-only meter is a second meter, on a separate circuit, historically reserved for storage heating and sometimes the water heater, with a dedicated night window of around nine hours. Its appeal rested on a marked night-time price differential. That differential has eroded. Sibelga, the Brussels distribution operator, now states plainly that the night-only meter has lost its purpose and is organising its gradual removal before 2030, with a deferral available until 1 January 2028 under conditions and financial support of up to 475 euros covering the electrician and the inspection body.
In Wallonia the point is subtler, and it went largely unnoticed. Since 1 January 2026, the Walloon off-peak schedule includes a new window from 11am to 5pm, seven days a week. Yet ORES, the main Walloon grid operator, specifies that this reform does not apply to the night-only meter. A water heater left on that meter therefore keeps heating at night only, while the main meter of the same home has gained six off-peak hours in broad daylight, exactly when rooftop solar panels are producing.

Moving the water heater back to the main meter is not a trivial operation. It adds the tank's power to that of the rest of the home and may exceed the available connection capacity. A qualified electrician must draw up a load assessment before any change, and the CWaPE, the Walloon energy regulator, notes that a capacity increase requested from the grid operator is a chargeable procedure.
How do you cut consumption without buying anything?
Six actions, ranked from most to least rewarding.
- Size the tank to the household. Fifty litres per adult is enough. Going from 300 to 200 litres for a family of four removes a meaningful share of standby losses, and the question naturally arises at replacement time.
- Check the setting, without going below 60 degrees. Many installations sit at 65 or 70 degrees for no reason. Coming back to 60 cuts losses by around a tenth, roughly twenty euros a year in Wallonia on a 200 litre tank.
- Insulate the tank and the first metres of pipework. A jacket and two sleeves cost little and work 8,760 hours a year.
- Time the heating cycle. In Wallonia, the 11am to 5pm window is now off-peak on the main dual-hourly meter. In Flanders, shift it to dodge the capacity peak.
- Have the element descaled during servicing, by a qualified professional.
- Switch off during long absences, then bring the tank back to 60 degrees before showering resumes.
None of these requires a purchase. The seventh lever does.
Electric or heat pump water heater: when does it pay off?
Between three and a half and five years, regional grants included.
A heat pump water heater works with a heat pump: it draws calories from the ambient air and delivers around 3 kWh of heat per 1 kWh of electricity consumed. écoconso cites a 110 litre model at 505 kWh a year in the Belgian climate zone, against 2,700 kWh for a conventional 100 litre electric tank. The ratio really is one to three.
For our four-person household, consumption drops from 3,000 to roughly 1,100 kWh a year. Savings then reach 612 euros in Flanders, 707 euros in Brussels and 719 euros in Wallonia.

The Flemish line deserves a word. A heat pump water heater draws around 500 W against 2,400 W for a resistance element, which removes up to 1.9 kW from the monthly peak and is worth a hundred euros a year in avoided capacity tariff on its own. No general-purpose calculator includes that item, and it narrows the gap between Flanders and the other two regions.
Two honest limits, all the same. The appliance needs enough air volume, usually an unheated room of at least 20 cubic metres, which rules out many apartments. And it is noisy, between 40 and 50 decibels depending on the model, which makes it a poor neighbour for a bedroom wall.

The settings to leave to a professional
One safety point before closing, because a great deal of bad advice circulates on this subject.
Lowering the storage temperature below 60 degrees saves a few euros and creates a real health risk: below that threshold, a hot water tank becomes a favourable environment for legionella. A 60 degree storage setting is not excessive caution, it is the recommended minimum, and a thermostatic mixing valve then brings water down to usable temperature at the tap.
Two other jobs are no more improvised. Any change to the consumer unit, the supply circuit or the tank connection belongs to a qualified electrician, with inspection by an approved body afterwards. Descaling the element and replacing the protective anode belong to a plumbing installer. Neither is a Sunday afternoon project.
